My reading has deeply informed my teaching philosophy. I identify with Several prominent thinkers regarding learning and language acquisition, perhaps none so closely as Erikson. Building identity is an important component of secondary education and something I believe an educator must hold in the front of their thinking as instruction happens.

These texts help me to address parts of being an educator that I will encounter though I do not hold endorsements for. Special Education and ELL students will always be a part of our classrooms in some way and we are responsible to meet them where they are and hold a toolkit to address them.

I keep a library close by as a reference for assessment and instruction. I am trying to help secondary students become critical readers and effective writers. These texts are integral to this portion of my practice:

As an educator, a library with ideas for lesson planning is important. I have purchased these and keep them at hand to break out of routines and to differentiate instruction.

Controversial Issues are a part of teaching: We are constantly learning more about learning and how our minds work. I believe it to be essential to my practice to participate in these debates and to teach them. Additionally, as professional teachers we are subject to policy and legislation. It will be a life long journey understanding the responsibilities we have to the public trust and the thinking behind the accountability our communities have for us.
