Topic: Chief Black Hawk is your Mascot

·         CC.9-10.W.9 Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research

·         Students read a wide range of print and non-print texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works.

·         Class discussion Surrounding the history of the School Mascot and the messaging (story) it sends about the school and the History of Illinois.   

·         5 paragraph paper discussing the reasons for and against the use of Sauk  Chief Black Hawk (Mahkatêwe-meshi-kêhkêhkwa)

Anticipatory Set/ Attention Getter:

Chief Black Hawk was a great Sauk Warrior who led the Black Hawk War and fought against European colonists in the United States. He fiercely protected his people and finished his life in estrangement from them and disgrace. Nevertheless, his legacy is so great that his English name has been lent to Naval ships, tactical helicopters, professional Hockey and Basketball teams, and your own high school Mascot and teams. What do you know about the historical figure Black Hawk?

 

Questions to Ask

 

 

·         Why do you think Black Hawk’s name is used so often as a totem of sports teams and war machines?

·         How do you think Black Hawk would feel about his name being used in this way?

·         Do you think that Blak Hawk is a fitting mascot?

3.      Discussion on the historical Black Hawk – 10  min

4.      Summary and assignment explanation – 5 minutes

In a five-paragraph essay, state and defend your position on whether or not Chief Black Hawk should be used as a sports mascot and his name lent to helicopters and Naval ships. In those five paragraphs, state your position and then use the attached articles to defend why or why not.  Guidelines/suggestions for each paragraph are at the end of the rubric.
